Long Time No Hear

I can't believe that it has been so long since I checked or wrote in my xanga. When you get a change drop me a line and let me know what and how you are doing.

I am currently in San Antonio for an English teachers' conference. Yes, the city was over run with people just like me. It was scary! I am now at the CEL conference which is even better. Colin and Ron are joining me on Wednesday for the holiday. I am looking forward to spending time with them. Colin has been studying the Alamo and Davy Crocket. He is so excited to see! I will let you know what he thought!

Talk to you soon!

Long Time Coming

It has been a long time since I journaled. So many things have happened since I last wrote. I guess I will break them up into sections just to get it all out.

The first major change came in January with a job change. I am no longer in the classroom. I am now an instructional coach. Basically I help the teachers teach. I also make sure that we are complying with Title 1 (federal program to supplement money into schools with poverty).

Ron and I got pregnant in early November and then miscarried the day before Colin's birthday. We are okay with everything and believe that it was right. We trust that God is doing what is right for us. We are still planning on trying again. It will have to happen soon since this year I am 40. I don't feel 40 (except in the morning when I wake up).

We also went through a major custody battle with Ron's ex. We lost because her lawyer is just slimy. Apparently the court does not think that there has been enough change in Michelle's life to warrant a change in custody. The judge during the hearing could not believe that Shannon turned down a free private school education for Michelle. I think that in itself shows how selfish she is. I have never seen a mother put themselves before their children like Shannon does. She does not even let Michelle make simple decisions like a hairstyle. (Michelle wanted to grow her hair for Locks of Love but her mother would not let her; I grew mine for her and we are making a donation of 12 inches.) Before we go on trips she scares Michelle about what to expect. SHe told her not to go outside in Louisiana because there were alligators all over the place. The sad thing is she had visited Louisiana herself--she just wanted to be spiteful and scare Michelle.

Enough ranting for now. I have thoroughly enjoyed my summer! We went to San Francisco and Redding for 2 weeks. I went to yearbook camp at Mars Hill and then traveled with my principal to Worcester, MA for a week. THere I got to spend a little time with Matt and Allison (they are so happy!!!) and my friend from Rhode Island. It was inspirational  on so many levels!

More next year :)

Well, I finally am adding a new entry. This new school is so demanding and I am drowning in work. Even for spring break we had a conference at the beach but we only had to work in the morning. I have some students in my classes that I really do like but there are some kids there that I really don't understand why they are there. THe lunch is not that good. One kid had not turned in a single assignment and he does not want to talk about his grades at all!

Any way, I finally I have a myspace also listed under insaneadviser. It's not pretty yet, but Ron is going to jazz it up for us. We figure we need to get one step ahead of the kids. IT won't be long before they have these things right?? How is everyone??

The wedding was pretty much what I was picturing. Simple yet elegant. When I get some pictures, I will post them. It was really special. We are settling back into a routine with school and kids and work. Mom is still here and Ron moved in officially with all his stuff this weekend. My classes are getting better. You would not even imagine some of the things that go on in this high school. It is so far removed from Airline High School-- or so I think.

75% of our student population is eligible for free lunch. Quite a few of them have been in prison. One of mine, if he gets suspended one more time will be headed back there. One girl is living in a 1 bedroom apartment with over 15 people with no electricity or running water for the past 6 months. There are only freshmen and sophomores and so many have babies or several babies. The culture is just so foreign to Airline for the most part. I know that Airline had it troubles also, but if you took Airlines troubles population, multiplied them and then filled a school with them that is what I teach. I do teach some good nice kids that do want to learn, but they are few and far between. I think that we (teachers) are expected to perform miracles, but there is only so much you can you do. Students have to do for themselves and want to do for themselves at some point. What I have a hard time understanding is not wanting to improve yourself. Look around, take advantage of the opportunities that are there, use the scholarships and opportunities that are there to give you and your family a better life. But instead so many of these kids don't see the light at the end of the tunnel and settle for a life of slums, jail, pregnancy, drugs, abuse, poverty, nothing. That is sadness in my heart because they have all the opportunities in the world.

Sorry to drag on and I hope that I have not offended anyone. Just reach for every gold ring that comes your way. Make the most of your life and give it your all.

Sorry that it has been so long since I have had an entry, but boy have things been crazy! It has been quite an adjustment. I appears that we will be getting married on January 27th here in Winston with just parents and children in attendance. Things at school have settled in and I have gooten used to my classes, although now that the semester is about over, I don't want to have new students.

If anyone there in Shreveport was able to cat/house sit for my mom from January 26 until Feb 9, please contact me. She is looking for someone reliable and is willing to pay for your services. I would really appreciate your assistance.

More later. Giving a final and thank God it's Friday!

PS the paper is looking great-- of course I haven't seen one since december-- but i have been meaning to tellyou all that you are doing a great job!!
